DEMENTIA and other previous projects

Althea Vega stepped up to fill in a big shoe in the film DEMENTIA where she portrayed the younger character of Nora Aunor, one of the beloved icons of Philippine Cinema. Treading on delicate ground, Althea’s acting chops was put to the test to somehow mirror the acting prowess of Nora. Despite the pressure of earning her stripes to a plum role given to her, Althea was able to deliver. She also perfectly fits that retro-look and feel of her character Mara.

Currently showing nationwide in Philippine theaters this September 2014, Dementia is a horror film directed by Perci Intalan, in his directorial debut. The film is top-billed by the critically-acclaimed actress Nora Aunor, a woman faced with dementia and strange occurrences in her ancestral home. Others actors include Jasmine Curtis, Bing Loyzaga, Chynna Ortaleza, Yul Servo and Lui Manansala.

Dementia will also be In-Competition at one of the world’s biggest and oldest fantasy/horror film festivals, Fantasporto International Film Festival in Portugal.

“METRO MANILA” screens in Philippine Cinemas on October 9

After winning the Audience Award for Best Dramatic Film (World Cinema category) at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the highly acclaimed “METRO MANILA” film will finally hit the Philippine shores on October 9.  Back to the very country where the film’s story had originated, it teems of local caliber actors such as Jake Macapagal, John Arcilla, Althea Vega and Angelina Sparks Kanapi.

Helmed by Oscar & BAFTA nominated British director Sean Ellis, “METRO MANILA” was released already in France, Belgium, Netherlands, Singapore and in the United Kingdom.  So far, “METRO MANILA” has been sold to 22 countries worldwide.

There was also news that Fox International Productions (FIP) has acquired remake rights to Sean Ellis’ METRO MANILA, a proof of how great the film is as Hollywood execs are keen to develop a version for the English-speaking audiences.

Another major feat was that U.K. has chosen “METRO MANILA” as their Official Entry to the OSCARS for the Best Foreign Film category for next year.  From the many great films that come out yearly from Great Britain,  for “METRO MANILA” to immerge as the cream of the crop in this year’s selection  is truly a big achievement already for the film.

“METRO MANILA” is a powerful and poignant drama with a heist thriller plot that reveals of a completely unexpected climax which got a lot of film critics raving about (see different film reviews below). The story reveals how the pitfalls of surviving an urban life can drive even a principled family to the ends of desperation.

This is one of Althea Vega’s critically acclaim films where she played Mai Ramirez, the wife of Oscar Ramirez (Jake Macapagal) who is force to work as a hostess in an erotic bar in order to provide for her family. In one heartbreaking scene inside an ‘aquarium’ of sorts of a sleazy bar, Althea’s character is strip away of her innocence and is on the verge of abject destitution.

“METRO MANILA” film reviews:

The mean streets of Manila have some tough lessons for a recently arrived couple in Sean Ellis’ observant feature

“Ellis and co-writer Frank E. Flowers start the movie off more like a drama, gradually increasing the tension as Oscar runs out of options to provide for his family. Since the film’s final twist necessitates a very specific buildup, opportunities to switch gears to full-on action are limited. Within this framework, however, they interweave enough ominous tip-offs to signal the film’s surprising outcome… much of the film’s effectiveness is attributable to the lead actors’ well-modulated performances. Production quality is first-rate, particularly considering the many practical locations required to shoot the film.”  ~ Hollywood Reporter

Sundance 2013: The Round-Up Part 3

“Though it remains unshowy, with the occasional blast or mere threat of gun violence, Ellis’s script sets up a quietly brilliant third act, in which Oscar is forced to choose between the moral high ground and the bidding of a man who has been so good to him. How it pans out you’ll have to see for yourself. Suffice to say, I couldn’t see any of it coming, and I found this to be one of the best films of the festival, poetic, authentic and damn near perfect.”  ~ Empire Magazine

Metro Manila as seen and transformed by foreign eyes

“But I always say that if something manages to hold your attention from beginning to end without allowing it to waver even for a moment, then it’s had an impact on you. The impression that “Metro Manila” left on me was precisely like the aforementioned punch in the gut—it keeps you pinned and the sensation lasts for a while.”  ~ VIDA CRUZ of GMA News

Sundance film festival 2013: Metro Manila – first look review

“Sean Ellis keeps things unpredictable with a poetic and searingly realistic migrant drama that gradually becomes a crime story… A thoughtful drama/heist movie set in the Philippines that not only captures a beautiful fly-on-the-wall view of the capital’s desperate underside, but also delivers some superb twists and turns as the central crime story starts to reveal itself.” ~ The Guardian

A Better Life: Ellis’ Latest a Masterful Drama of Sacrifice

“Metro Manila sports some excellent visual sequences, and manages to abstain from veering into overly soapy melodramatics”   by Nicholas Bell of ioncinema.com

LFM Reviews Metro Manila @ The 2013 Sundance Film Festival

“Metro Manila will not be to all tastes, but it is a surprisingly powerful combination of class conscious social drama and the caper movie. Highly recommended for fans of Filipino cinema and verité-ish crime-in-the-streets films.”  ~ libertasfilmmagazine.com

Sundance London 2013 Review: Metro Manila

“Moments of drama and upset are always touching – Ellis knowing how to create an atmosphere expertly. The scenes of tension and violence equal Ellis’ dramatic capabilities, with action ferocious and heart-pounding.”  ~ liveforfilms.com

Althea Vega top bills AMOR Y MUERTE

In her biggest acting role so far, Althea Vega leads the cast of a powerful period piece film “AMOR Y MUERTE” directed by Cesar Evangelista and written by Jerry Gracio.

AMOR Y MUERTE (means “love and death”) is an examination of the initial encounter between the Indios (natives) and their colonizers (Spaniards) and their conflicting views on love, passion, religion and sexuality.

Ostensibly a love triangle set in 16th century Philippines, AMOR Y MUERTE  is also a gripping portrait of how the invaders–the Spaniards with their own notions on love, sexuality, and religion–inevitably robbed the natives of their sense of rawness, spontaneity and utter lack of guile. The other actors of the film are Ama Quiambao, Markki Stroem, Adrian Sebastian and Kuya Manzano.
